Wikipedia defines SEO as "a subset of search engine marketing, and deals with improving the number and/or quality of visitors to a web site from "natural" (also known as "organic" or "algorithmic") search engine listings." There are two kinds of SEO, black hat and white hat. White Hat SEO concentrates on providing good content on your web site and links from related sites to help move your site up in the rankings. There are elements of tweaking the copyrighting and the structure of the site so that it ranks higher on search engines, but all of these things are done for the benefit of the user, not specifically and only to "game" search engines. Black Hat SEO uses all kinds of tricks that are frowned upon by search engine companies. Terms like cloaking, doorway pages, site scraping, mirror sites, and duplicate content are associated with 'black hat' techniques. They don't really have anything to do with the way that legitimate small businesses want to build a web site and build traffic. We don't use Black Hat techniques; the risks of having a site banned or penalized are too great. Why should you care about SEO? Well, nowadays just putting up a web page isn't good enough. Publishing a website without making sure that people can find it is a waste of time. Nowadays your website has to be visible. People have to be able to find your website, especially if they don't know that your business exists. People are throwing away their phonebooks and Yellow Pages directories and depending on finding information about relevant businesses on the Internet. Your customers are using search engines to find what they need. Statistics say that more than 80% of websites are accessed from a search engine page. If your business doesn't come up in a search--and more importantly in the top ten listings of a search--in one of the major search engines, then your business might as well not be listed at all, or even have a web page. You are, in fact, invisible on the Internet... However, if you employ a successful SEO campaign, you will attract new business--business that you otherwise would have missed, business that your competitors will get. SEO efforts cost money, but a good search engine optimization consultant will achieve results that pay off greatly in excess of the cost of the campaign. SEO is about results. Let's face it, if you were to hire a vendor to work with you on your web site and have him be responsible for the SEO of your site, you would expect results in the way of high placements on SERPs (search engine results page.) Well, that is what I expected from myself; and it is also what our clients expect from us. How much would one extra placement be worth to your business? How much would a handful of clients be worth to your business? Your profits will be many times anything that you spend on SEO. We have literally dozens of search phrases where we rank in the top 1 through 4 spots and many others where we rank in the top 10. Not all of our search phrases show on the the first page of Google. Getting high SERP placements is a matter of following a continuous process. If someone says that they can get your site ranked in the top 10 overnight and keep you there, don't believe them. SEO is a process that has to continue for as long as you own your site. If you don't pay attention to SEO with every page added, as time goes on, your rankings will plummet. Think of search engine rankings as a war where battles must be fought ever yday... only unlike a traditional war with one or two opponents, you are fighting with 10's of millions of other sites for the attention of viewers.
