The reason for my very sporadic posts here is that I’ve been working on a new startup venture that has literally eaten my time, almost every spare moment since back in February. In August things got really serious with a round of seed money and the addition of a full time executive team. Since August, we have been working tirelessly (well that really isn’t true, all of us have been tired as hell at one point or another) to bring our vision to reality.

Our Vision – "Hiring without barriers."

Today is a milestone for us. After months of work, thousands of hours of development, hundreds of thousands of lines of code, numerous focus groups, and weeks of public beta testing, we are now at soft launch. Our new venture is called Interview on Demand, and we provide hiring companies with the ability to invite candidates to take video interviews — online in a secure web-hosted environment. The hiring team then has the ability to review the completed interview, via internet browsers, any where, any time. Human resource professionals who are responsible for most of the leg work in filling positions can evaluate the respondents and forward the top candidates to hiring managers by email. This feature give the hiring manager the opportunity to view the best candidates without having to learn anything new, no new application software to learn, no new procedures, no new passwords or usernames — just open and email and review the candidate.

Our Mission – "To dramatically improve industry hiring practices by providing an on-line video interviewing service so powerful and effective that our clients cannot imagine hiring without it."

As of today, hiring managers can go to our website and sign up for a free trial and purchase additional interview ‘credits’ as they begin to ‘invite’ candidates to take interviews. Online, secure credit card processing using industry standard encryption makes the process painless. We have an extensive library of videos in the learning center to walk both hiring manager and candidate through their perspective procedures within the system. But the software is so simple that most people, even technophobes, can navigate successfully and complete their individual tasks without the need for any kind of help. Speaking of help, there is a complete help system and tool tips explain the function of almost every button and window on the screen. On the Career Video Expert Bullhorn blog, we discuss the use of video interviewing for many different angles – from how to implement within the your company’s hiring process, to comparing and contrasting it with video resumes, and even tips on how jobseekers/candidates can prepare and do their best in front of the camera.

There are tons of things planned in terms of future features but I can’t get into specifics here because of international trademark rules. Let’s just say that our soft launch, with the very well developed application suited for hiring managers serves but one part of the community of individuals involved in the hiring process that we see as having two other very important sectors – third party recruiters and jobseekers.

We also have launched a newsletter in conjunction with Interview on Demand – Hire Tech News. The newsletter focuses on the use of technology for the hiring process. It is distributed electronically on monthly basis to our list of over 15,000 recruiters and over 20,000 hiring managers and human resource professionals. Hire Tech News is also supported by an online blog with archived newsletters and full articles from the electronic distribution. If you’d like to sign up to receive the newsletter, just visit the sign up page, and choose from a list of specific interests. Also, if you would like to write an article for inclusion in the newsletter, just contact peggy (at) interviewondemand.com and she can give you all the details of how you can make a submission.

As promised, here is a list of a bunch of people who have been very helpful to me and the Restaurant Recruiter’s blog. It is by no means a complete list (I’ll be happy to add your name if I’ve left you out) but it is a pretty wide cross-section of bloggers form all different walks of life. Each has been helpful in untold ways. I hope that you will check out their blogs and make them part of your regular reading, if not part of your blog roll. They are presented in no particular order – so Animal, don’t feel slighted.

Jason (not related to Jessica) Alba – we have both learned a lot about blogging from each other and he’s been a great resource to me. [and yes there will be a picture of Jessica at the end of my article]

Dave Mendoza – a fantastic networker, he helped launch my online presence. Dave has a wonderful blog that gives back immeasurably to the recruiting community. He has won numerous awards, and will keep doing so. You gotta love Dave, heck you can’t be more than six degrees from him.

Ami Givertz- Ami is a wonderful fellow whose vocabulary dwarfs most dictionaries, I’m not smart enough to know what he is writing about half the time, but you might be.

Dennis Smith – the fist person to ever post a comment on my blog. Dennis actually let me know that someone was reading my words and it felt good.

The Recruiting Animal- who is an irreverent beast, has made much fun of me, and helped give me a platform for expressing myself. I’ve had to turn down many an invitation to his radio show (shows you how hard up he is for guests) but in the coming year, I think we will have a lot more to talk about.

Julian and Shannon Seery Gude -who helped, probably without knowing by making some comments that made me think in new ways.

Karen Mattonen – who provided me with a an opportunity to spar about numerous topics. AFAIK,	Karen still doesn’t have her own blog, but you can find her in the Recruiting Lounge with Jim Stroud quite regularly.

Steve (Mr. Clean) Levy – who has provided me with many hours of entertainment, but to be fair it was an even swap. He may be the reason that I give the "Improv" a shot.

Jason Goldberg of Jobster – who provided me with a target for some controversial and outspoken posts.

Jason Davis – who has been a great source of inspiration and information. Jason was the first person in the recruit-o-sphere who picked up the phone and gave me a call. I loved his leadership at RDC and he has quite the social network growing at recruitingblogs.com.

John (Papa Smurf) Sumser – who provided me with lots of opportunities to disagree with his opinions, pontifications, and predictions. John showed himself to be a stand up guy by inviting me personally to attend the Atlanta	Recruiting	Roadshow.

Tim Totten – who reminded me that you really can have a global audience.

Then there are the almost innumerable people that helped me with my blog boycott for breast cancer:

Robyn Tippins of Inside Motherhood – Robyn wrote on of the most touching entries in tribute to Granny Jane.

Christina Zola of Solo Mother who wrote a piece about her Grandmother (a breast cancer survivor) and her aunt who was dying of terminal cancer.

Ruth Schaffer of Eating Fabulous -Ruth’s post actually put us over the top.

Cathy Spalding of Chocolate Bytes – posted on her blog and pushed us well past our goal.

Karen Weideman of Thrifty Mom -Karen was kind enough to post about my boycott. Thankfully she doesn’t have a personal connection to breast cancer.

Liz Strauss of Successful ^and Outstanding Blog(gers)- Wow! Liz really answered the call. She was kind and generous and hooked me into her personal network of friends who pushed us past our goal. Liz even posted (against her own policy) about the boycott	on her own site.

Hsien-Hsien Lei of GeneticsAndHealth.com, AHeartyLife.com, PlayLibrary.com
and Cotton Pickin’ Days – Just like Liz, Hsien opened up her network and put out the call to everyone in an effort to help.

And special mention for Julian and Shannon Seery Gude. They were nice enough to post an announcement on all of their blogs -Exceler8ion,Localna8ion,That’s Wet ,Cute Little Bastards, and julians.name. I think if I had given them advance warning, they might have single-handedly gotten me over the hump by creating enough blogs to get the job done.

And finally "here’s a picture of Jessica Alba"

While I’ve written about Jason Goldberg on a couple of occasions here, I haven’t done so lately. Jason Goldberg is the CEO (for now) of Jobster. Jobster is some sort of career tool that tries to compete with Monster to provide a platform for jobseekers to park a resume and companies to search for candidates that might be a suitable fit for job openings. I can’t get much more accurate than that because since I’ve known about Jobster, they have changed their business plan/direction/model four times… Anyway, the reason I tell you this is just as way of background.

Last week, Jason Goldberg, in a fit of childish rage had his lawyers prepare a cease and desist letter threatening the shutdown of RecruitingBlogs.com. RecruitingBlogs.com is a social networking site run on the Ning platform and created by Jason Davis – former editor of Recruiting.com (RDC), a site that he sold to Jobster just more than a year ago, which he ran under contract. Jason Davis left his post at RDC and the employ of Jobster back on May 2nd.

When Jason Davis got the letter from Jobster’s lawyers (not sure if it was in house counsel or an outside firm) he shared it with the members of RecruitingBlogs.com. It ignited a firestorm of commentary, almost all of which was incredibly supportive of Jason Davis and his site, and extremely negative toward the attitude and actions of Jason Goldberg, et al. I participated in showing support of Jason Davis and RecruitingBlogs.com and criticized Mr. Goldberg pretty harshly for his immature behavior, lack of leadership, and inability to admit his mistakes. It wasn’t the first time that Jason Goldberg was roundly criticized by the recruiting blog-o-sphere, nor myself. Joel Cheesman has taken Goldberg to task on an number of occasions – one of the most heated discussions was titled "Is Jason Goldberg killing Jobster?"

On Mr. Goldberg’s blog, I took him to task for his rudely condescending tone, insulting treatment of bloggers, and refusal to admit his mistakes. In his last response on the subject – another attempt to change the subject and spin his way out of trouble – he suggested that we answer the question "Should CEO’s blog?" I had to laugh at the cheesiness (sorry Joel) of the question. But early this morning, I got an email which answered the question, at least with regard to Jason Goldberg and Jobster, unequivocally. If you will just click on the small picture at the beginning of this post it will lead you to a very readable enlargement. You will be able to see that it is a mass email that went out to all the clients and registered members of Jobster. Further examination (aided by the red underlines) of the email will reveal no less than THREE misspellings. Now, most people who know me know that I’m prone to making a typo here or there as well as including some misspelled words in a quickly dashed off, informal email. But to send out a mass email to one’s entire customer base, with such glaring errors gives one pause. What kind of a joke outfit is Jason running? What kind of impression does that kind of slipshod work make on the audience?

It does help me answer the question that Mr. Goldberg posed, though. Mr. Goldberg, my answer to you is no, at least YOU shouldn’t. Your time would be better spent running your company so that you could keep the embarrassing incidents to a minimum. Hey, by not blogging, you could kill two birds with one stone. You wouldn’t be as likely to stick your foot in your own mouth, and you might catch some of the mistakes that your team is apt to make before they occur.

Sadly, I can’t use the trip myself because of Roscoe and Doobie [see their puppycam on Fridays at Recruiting-USA.com]. I spoke to the folks who run the resort and they say that the rounds of golf can be combined, so if you wanted to do three golfers and three non-golfers, the golfers could play 2 rounds per day for a total of 6 each.

So, people really think Don Imus is a racist? Get real folks. He used some crude remarks that referred to the ethnicity of the Rutgers women’s basketball team – "nappy-headed hos" is what he called them. Now the usual suspects (Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and others) are clamoring for Imus to be fired and locked out of radio. What a fitting punishment for following the same shock-jock MO that he has used for the last 30 years.

Sharpton, Jackson, and other black leaders are concerned about his "abusive and degrading remarks" and that "they have no place in our society." No place in our society, really? What about hip hop and rap lyrics? Have either of the ‘big two’ listened to any of the music (I use the term very loosely) that is generated by the gangstas and thugs who call themselves rappers? Bitches, hos, and words that I’m not going to print here… Sharpton thinks that Imus’ remarks are degrading, what kind of drugs is he smoking.

Do I think Imus was wrong for saying what he said, yeah, I wouldn’t have said it. But do I think there is huge overreaction about the ‘incident’? Yep, I sure do. People need to get some perspective. If you want to respected, respect your self and your community, and your neighbors. It is too much of a double standard for me to support severely punishing Imus for saying something distasteful that is much milder than the words that rappers use to degrade females of their own race. Those same females who idolize and spend hard earned money to buy their CDs and download their music.

If people want the issue of race to not be a negative factor in their lives, then they need to stop playing the race card. I am tired of the double standard that some black so-called leaders try to enforce on the ‘white’ community. Learn to have respect for yourselves and demand it from everyone in your community before you start throwing around the "R" word at people just because they are white.

Last week I discovered something that I had to fix. Not long ago I created a PDF of a popular series of posts that I had done here. Pat Lefler (who has a very good blog called "Intrepid ideas…and other musings") had made the suggestion that I make the series "10 Ways to Make Recruiters Love You" into a PDF so that people could download it and use it as an offline resource. To be honest, I hadn’t considered that it might be good enough for people to refer to on a regular basis. I would have understood if it was titled "10 Ways to Make Love to Recruiters"… but that would have to be posted on another site perhaps with a domain suffix of XXX and would have had BIG coverage by Dave Mendoza on his blog Six Degrees from Dave, oh well I digress.

Having judged the suggestion worthwhile, I went about looking for a suitable method of turning the document into a PDF. What I found was an online PDF document translator that worked with tons of different formats. So I spent about an hour working on the production of the PDF using the free online resource at PDFOnline. I posted the PDF as a gift to my readers and, judging by the links to it from other sites including Shally Steckerl of Job Machine on his CyberSleuthing blog, it was pretty popular.

However, it wasn’t until last week that I discovered that the online PDF creator didn’t preserve the hyperlinks in my article. I was sorely disappointed by that. I also had noticed that one of my pals, Kent Blumberg, had posted on his blog about a PDF tool that he uses, easyPDF Printer 4.3 from BCL Technologies [while not free, very reasonable at around $15], preserves the links in documents when it creates the PDF. So I thought to myself, this is the solution. On Thursday [I think it was Thursday, busy days have a habit of running together] I went to the site to download and purchase easyPDF Printer, and to my utter disappointment, discovered that they don’t yet support Windows Vista [another reason to just say no to Vista]. Now I have a problem that I dearly want to fix, but don’t have the ability to do it. So, I call on my friend Kent and ask a favor of him. I didn’t expect how wonderfully he would reply. I asked Kent if he would make a quick run through of my original document turning it into a PDF using his copy of easyPDF Printer so that I could have active hyperlinks in it and repost it. Kent said that he would be glad to and told me he could get it done by the weekend. I responded that would be great.

Well, Kent got it done much faster than that. In fact he built a TOC with active links, reformatted it for better flow, and made it look like a Million bucks [well much better than I had originally done it anyway, we have to consider the source material. ] So I’m going to make a permanent link to the document so that people can get to it very easily. I also want to express my deepest gratitude for Kent’s help. Kent knows something about helping others as it is a foundation of great leadership. Read Kent’s blog – Kent Blumberg – Leadership, strategy, and performance and find out more about his leadership style and thoughts.

Finally, I would like to refer my friend the Recruiting Animal, author of The Recruiting Animal blog, RecruitingBloggers, and Recruiting Pundits to the last sentence in my opening paragraph. I think that qualifies as humor Animal… now where is your "monetization"?

I really don’t need I dime, I need your input. If you don’t have much time to read today, either come back when you do, or skip down to the last paragraph and read the bolded sentence.

I don’t really know how many of you (all 5 of you, I am up to five readers now, right?) know that I have established another business unit whose goal is provide SEO (search engine optimization) and web services for recruiters and small business, but if you don’t, you will after reading the rest of this post. My favor is that I’d like for you to visit another website and give me some feedback on it.

Our new company is located at www.recruiting-usa.com and it is packed with service offerings that could be useful to many of you. Recruiting-USA.com started out as a domain name that I purchased to provide one master domain for many recruiting specialties. If you wanted to find healthcare recruiters and jobs you would go to healthcare.recruiting-usa.com; IT recruiters and jobs would be at it.recruiting-usa.com; general sales would be sales.recruiting-usa.com… you get the idea. It was going to be a memorable, findable domain name where I could add top recruiters with different sub-specialties to my firm and have a separate look and feel for each one.

A funny thing happened on the way to that plan. I left my old job at an MRI franchise office and started my own firm – CEC Search. With the business just starting and without the umbrella support of a large organization like MRI, I felt that I needed a first class website that ranked very highly in SERPs (search engine ranking placements) so that CEC Search would have legitimacy, weight, and reach. The project of building the website and obtaining high rankings on Google and Yahoo was rather daunting and could be very expensive. I decided that I would take the project on myself. So I dove in and did tons of research on SEO and effective ways to make search engines rank your site in the top results. After building the website, I put together my comprehensive program for moving CEC Search steadily up the rankings. I was pretty successful at doing that (you can see some of the results for SEO consulting here) with over 55 #1 keyword listings in major search engines and over 230 first page listings, all for great, relevant keywords for the restaurant industry and recruiting specialty.

Shortly after having achieved what I thought were spectacular results I had the chance to consult for another recruiting firm owner, Peggy McKee of PHC Consulting. Peggy had a one page site that was static and hosted for free one DotEasy. The hosting and website were worth the price that she was paying, with traffic to her site that was very minor and no listings on major search engines. Peggy hired us to redesign her website, build her blog, integrate her recruiting software [Big Biller] with her website, and perform SEO on an ongoing basis. Peggy’s firm, PHC Consulting recruits in the medical sales arena, specifically laboratory sales. Her new site went live on Jan 31. I’m happy to report that she has seen traffic increases on the order of forty fold (so far) and business has grown so much that she is adding another recruiter (after being a solo practitioner for over 7 years.)

The great success of my site and the work that we did with PHC Consulting (especially the targeting of medical sales jobs, pharmaceutical sales jobs, and laboratory sales jobs in search engines) gave me the idea that a lot more small to medium sized recruiting organizations could use that kind of service. So I decided to launch our next enterprise, web services for recruiters and small businesses and give it the domain name that I had set aside for me – Recruiting-USA.com. That we we could have a site that acts as a portal for all kinds of niche recruiting firms and give them a one stop shop for all of their SEO and web service needs. We offer website design, hosting, domain name forwarding, blog building and hosting, SEO consulting, and technology consulting.

What I would like from you (if you’ve read this far, thanks so much) is for you to visit the site and give me your feedback. We have a home page that describes our services and a blog with helpful free tips on blogging, search engine optimization, and search engine marketing; plus free webmaster tools.

The Recruiting-USA.com website is pretty new and I’d love to hear what y’all think needs to be added, changed, intensified, reworked, better explained, or left alone. If you would be kind enough to share you thoughts, it would be amazingly helpful.

There is a contact page for the site, which will send me an email. Be sure to check out some of the articles including my series on WordPress 2.1 plug-ins and one that should be helpful to all (inspired by a post on JibberJobber about their winner of the You Get It award) "<a title="Building a personal brand?

Today, I’m a man on a mission. Several of my closer friends in the recruiting community know that I am currently working on a project that is very important to me… I’m very passionate about this particular topic. In fact, I’m close to being obsessed.

The subject, which will be revealed fully as the week progresses, is one of import to many people and a much wider audience than my usual readers. It is a public service campaign for the benefit of dogs and dog owners. I am about to fully launch a site that will help owners choose between moral and ethical breeders and those who mistreat both animals and their customers. I’ve been busy for about 2 days putting the site together and will be outlining my story and the reason for the site as time goes along. What I would like to ask of my audience is to stay tuned, read the blog articles as they appear, visit the website [which will be listed as soon as all the pages are done - probably later today], link to the new site and this article, and pass the links along to anyone and everyone you know that cares about dogs.

What does this have to do with success and passion? Good question. I hope that you will see over the next few weeks that passion helps drive the success of your projects. Without passion, your work will be dull and uninspired. But with it, you work won’t seem like work. With passion, you can accomplish seemingly impossible goals. In the coming weeks, I’m going to attack this campaign with all the passion that I can muster. I’ll be reporting the results to you here, on a regular basis.
