Okay, maybe a little dramatic, but it did catch your eye. Today we will continue the “Targeted Search” with Food Services. Technically speaking, Food Services can include top restaurant staff to those working in fast food. Although some might disagree, the coverage will be broad for the purposes of today’s post. Rather than focusing on just one type of resource, there will be a mix.

Dixie Search Associates – Dixie Search is an international recruiting firm that specializes in all segments of Food, Beverages and Hospitality recruitment. Their main page gives an overview of the firm and lists a number of Domestic and International “Hot Searches” (such as Food Services Manager – NY). The bottom of the main page provides contact information. Click “Current Openings” at the top of the page to go to the opportunities page. This page is sorted by main category (Food Manufacturing, Supermarket, etc.). The left-hand side of the page explains the process. There is a Candidate Registration form at the bottom of the main opportunities page.

McDonald’s – Number 106 on the Fortune 500 list, there are a number of food services related careers available at McDonald’s. From Restaurant Manager to Crew Member to District Manager. The main career page has links to several success stories in the center of the page. Careers Search (search by job category), Restaurant Crew Opportunities (Crew, Management and Support Opportunities) and “Hamburger University” (McDonald’s Management Training Center) links are available on the left hand side of the page.

American Culinary Federation (ACF) – ACF is a professional organization dedicated to chefs and is an industry resource. Their career site provides registration (anonymous), Job Search, Personal Alerts and a Job seeker account which will allows management of your resumes and job search alerts. “View Jobs” links to the job seeker page where you can search by keyword, location or Job Type.

FoodandDrinkJobs.com – This is a dedicated search site for the food and beverage industry. The site has 664 registered employers (when I checked). Click on the “Candidate Home” tab to get started. Similar to the ACF site, you can post an anonymous resume, view jobs, create a job alert and create a free account to manage your resumes and job alerts. There were over 3,400 job opportunities when I checked the site, from Pizza Grill cook to Bakery Associate to Executive Chef. The search function allows for keyword search, location search or job type.

Good luck in your search.

All across America this time of year, college campuses are filling with new and returning students all looking for that magic piece of paper that will ensure their futures. All that effort and all those tuition fees…. You’d better make sure it’s worth it.

No offense to those with psychology degrees, but the most valuable college degrees now and in the future are much more science and technology-oriented: Engineering, Computers, Finance, and Science.

A List of Best College Degrees By Salary fills the top 5 with the engineering and computer science types, but #10 is Business Management, #11 is Marketing, and #13 is Biology. Psychology is way down there at #19…past even English and Communications.

A Top 10 List of High Paying Careers ranks Pharmaceutical Representative at #9 with an average starting salary of $51,000+. I happen to know of similar sales jobs in clinical diagnostics, research laboratory, histology, pathology, imaging, DNA, cellular, molecular, surgical supplies, hospital equipment, and medical device where you can do better. In a more specialized medical sales job, you can be one of the few, not one of the many, and be that much more successful. What kind of degree is most helpful for those jobs? Biology, microbiology, chemistry…you get the idea. Not psychology. Sorry.

The lawyers for Chain Leader magazine contacted us and threatened us with legal action for copyright infringement if we continued to display their magazine on our site. [their magazine was located on this page in an Iframe]

Since we were presenting their site in its entirety without modification, since we were not claiming any of their work as our own, we believe that what we were doing was completely legitimate and was actually helping their business by exposing our readers to their magazine.

It is our opinion that we were not breaking any laws and that we were using this page to serve our readers while also providing a direct benefit to Chain Leader magazine.

Apparently, the people in charge of the magazine who also direct their legal resources don’t have any idea how the Internet works. Good luck to them in their pursuit to capture market share from online magazines like Nation’s Restaurant News with editorial policy like this.

We apologize to any of our readers who are used to coming here to read Chain Leader magazine. We also regret that we can not in good conscience provide a link to their site.

Some people just don’t have enough real work to do. Take for example The National Inhalant Prevention Council who have been angered by and are protesting the Wendy’s commercial where office workers ‘fill’ themselves with helium.

Supposedly the action of filling themselves with helium will give people ‘inappropriate’ ideas. Come one guys, let’s do something constructive with your time and money. Helium is an inert gas that is sometimes added to deep water diver’s breathing gas mixture. It doesn’t cause any ill effects, other than that annoying chipmunks sounding voice. While these people are all riled up against Wendy’s, there are real inhalant issues out there to deal with. Mostly they can be handled with education, because kids usually only hear the ‘good’ effects of and not about the death or brain damage that huffing can lead to.

As for the commercial, well I don’t like any of the new Wendy’s ‘wig’ commercials, but that is another story.

Cheese Pizza are now forced to submit ALL of the marketing plans and programs and explain how they ‘target’ kids and adolescents.

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of the government telling me "what’s best for me" and trying to legislate my "perfect life." What in the heck are they thinking up there? We don’t know that kids love ‘Happy Meals’, mice that sing, or toys with the french fries? Come on. Can we not find better things to do with our tax dollars than fund ridiculous investigations of the fast food industry and whether or not they are trying to sell more hamburgers to kids. If it were me, as CEO of one of the big chains, I’d say "Yep you caught us, we are trying, really hard to sell more hamburgers to kids! So now what are you going to do?" Wasn’t our country built on capitalism and the free enterprise system? Last time we tried communism here, wasn’t it William Bradford who discovered that it just doesn’t work.

Come on Washington, enough already. How ’bout spending your energy on something important like figuring out how to win the war on terror.

I’ve been tagged before, by my buddy Jason (not related to Jessica) Alba [and yes you can scroll down to the end and find a fresh pic of our favorite eye-candy] and enjoyed the links that game provided as well as getting to learn about some of the folks who were in the game. Back then, it was only 5 people I had to tag. Now it’s eight… holy cow! Hope they don’t get annoyed with me.

Troy was tagged Moises Lopez got tagged by Amybeth Hale (she of research goddess – still in training!), who was tagged by Dan Sweet from FRACAT, who was tagged by Christine O’Kelly of Create Business Growth Offer, who was tagged by Wizzer…. And that is far back as I can go. Having given you the history of our little lining pyramid scheme, now it’s time to lay out the rules of the game:

THE RULZ
1. Post these rules before you give you the facts.
2. List 8 random facts about yourself.
3. At the end of your post, choose (tag) 8 people and list their names (linking to them).
4. Leave them a comment on their blog letting them know they’ve been tagged!

So here we go… eight random facts about Carl:

I was an Eagle Scout.

Until high school, I never attended any school more than 2 years.

At the age of 11, I caught an Atlantic sailfish that was 4 inches off the then world record.

I was certified as a scuba diver in 1973.

I have a cousin who was the Mayor of the town where my mom grew up.

In 1970 I spent 6 days in the hospital after being shot in the chest.

My beautiful bride of 22 years and I met while attending the regional training center during our management careers with Pizza Hut. I knew within a few days that I would marry her; we were married in less than a year.

Although I was slated to be a pilot after graduating from USNA, I HATE to fly.

Not sure that I’ll be able to find 8 people to tag, but here goes:

Jason Alba (he’s my favorite guy to dump work on) of Jibber Jobber.

<strike>Shally Steckerl – Master CyberSleuth</strike> [already tagged]

Jason Goldberg of Jobster <evil grin>because I’d love to see how he reacts to being tagged</evil grin>

Barbara Ling of Recruiter 2.0 Marketing Musings

I was just reading today about a class action lawsuit that was approved to move forward in the courts. It seems that servers of Applebee’s are an approved class and the action is against Applebee’s International Inc. The suit alleges that servers are required to spend more than 20% of their time doing un-tipped work but that they are only compensated at the tipped employee hourly rate.

The only thing that I could find in the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) with regard to hourly wages for tipped employees is that a tipped employee is defined as one who receives at least $30.00 dollars in tips during one month (this is the federal definition, some states vary.) And that reported tips plus the hourly tipped employee wage rate ($2.13/hr) must equal the federal minimum wage which is now $5.15/hr. I couldn’t find anything that delineated the amount of time spent in tipped or non-tipped activities.

As the estimates are that as many as 60,000 servers may be included in the class, if an average server worked only 20 hours per week, the judgment could zoom past $60 MM not including interest, if the payment shortage was just one dollar per hour. My conclusion is that this is just another example of a frivolous lawsuit brought to court by a greedy firm hoping to cash in big because of the size of the class. When I was in unit level management (at Shoney’s during it’s heyday) all the managers were out earned by the good servers on the wait staff.

Too bad this judge doesn’t seem to have any restaurant management in his background… he’d have thrown the case out with a big belly laugh.
