From Forrest Gump’s Guide to Becoming a Gazillionaire, on OnMoneyMaking.com:

Who taught Elvis how to dance, received the Congressional Medal of Honor, got Nixon impeached, became the world ping-pong champion, built a national shrimping empire, and fathered Haley Joel Osment?

One man: Forrest Gump.

If I could choose one mentor in business, or in life in general, it would be Gump. I don’t care that he’s not real. The wisdom that he conveys is real, and I think we could all learn something from it.

This advice is so great, I’m going to tweak it for you so you can use it for medical sales (and still make a little money):

“And cause I was a gazillionaire, and I liked doin’ it so much, I cut that grass for free.”

If you’re in sales, you better like people and love sales. If you’re in medical sales, you better love the science and technology of it, too, so that keeping up with trends and development in the industry is a pleasure, not a chore. Be in the kind of medical sales that really interests you-there’s a lot to choose from: medical device sales, laboratory sales, pharmaceutical sales, hospital equipment sales, imaging sales, pathology sales, cellular or molecular products sales, surgical sales, clinical diagnostics sales, or biotechnology sales. (Find out about how to get into medical sales.) If you love it, you’ll be good at it, and if you’re good at it, the money will come.

“I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.”

E.Q. is just as important as I.Q. Successful salespeople know that sales are a lot about building relationships-it’s not just about the product. Customers know if you’re really in it to help them, or to help you.

“Stupid is as stupid does.”

Make good decisions. All the time. Don’t get caught not being where you said you’d be (sometimes they’re tracking you), keep your commitments, follow through, and make your company look good.

“When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go… you know… I went.”

Take care of yourself. Keeping yourself in good physical condition by getting enough exercise, eating right, getting enough rest, and taking mental breaks from the job once in a while will keep you at the top of your game.

“Momma always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them.”

Find a mentor. Read books on sales. Read medical sales blogs. Come to the medical sales recruiter for custom consulting to help you be the best sales rep you can be and have the best job you can have.

“I gotta save Bubba!”

Loyalty matters.

“Jenny taught me how to climb. And I taught her how to dangle.”

If you had a mentor (or even if you didn’t), be one. Be a team player. Always be networking. You never know where your next lead is coming from, or whether you might need a job sometime in the future. Someone who has been willing to help others will almost always get that generosity rewarded in some way down the road.

“My Momma always said you’ve got to put the past behind you before you can move on.”

Don’t dwell on a sale that didn’t close, or a job that went bad. Learn what you can from it, and move on.

“I’m sorry I had to fight in the middle of your Black Panther party.”

Learning the art of apologizing will serve you well. Using it even when you don’t think you’re wrong will (sometimes) serve you better.

“Now you wouldn’t believe me if I told you, but I can run like the wind blows.”

If you’re in sales, you better know how to brag. About your products when you’re selling, and about yourself when you’re job searching. One great tip is to keep a brag book. What do you keep in it? Letters from happy customers, “good job” letters from sales managers, sales and revenue numbers, data on improvements you’ve made, training you’ve completed, awards and accomplishments. Learning how to use it in interviews will give you an edge.

“My Momma always said, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’ ”

On medical sales: No kid ever said, “I want to grow up to be a medical supply sales rep!” Still, there’s satisfying reward, financially and otherwise, in educating customers and delivering a product that will benefit people. There’s a lot of ways to combine the loves of people, business and science in healthcare sales.

On job searching: Don’t be afraid to move on (and up) if you get the opportunity, and don’t be afraid to go after what you want. Be open-minded about relocating, because it could be the step that leads to really great things. One tool that can help you move up or get the job is the 30/60/90 day sales plan template

“That’s all I have to say about that.”

Just as important as knowing when to talk, and when to push for the close, is knowing when to shut up and wait.

The ball pops out of the shortstop’s glove, even though it went straight at him. “Oh, he bobbled it,” the sportscaster calls. It’s not a career-ender, but it may get the runner on, and maybe that runner will score. In the end, the bobble may be costly. Job search bobbles are small and may fall under the radar. But, they can be costly, so try to avoid them:

Presentation counts. Mickey Mouse dress socks peek from under a candidate’s slacks as he sits down. The candidate doesn’t get the job, as the employer interprets his choice of socks as a lapse in professional judgment. (True story, and this happened at the meeting when our client was going to make this candidate an offer!)

Timing is everything. Get to your interview fifteen minutes early. There may be forms to fill out. There may be security hurdles to clear in the lobby reception. There may be a slow elevator. All three apply to just one employer for whom I recruited.

Choose your words wisely. Your word processing program only catches words that are completely misspelled. It won’t catch words that are out-of-context. If a salesperson does “meat” clients, perhaps she should be a butcher. Even the most vulgar trader probably doesn’t work in “pubic” finance. There may be a “Colombia” University in Bogota, but not in New York.

In short, be conservative. Dress in proper business attire. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the interview. Proofread all of your correspondence. Bobbles are only funny on the highlight reel.

Author Website: http://www.phcconsulting.com/WordPress

I got an email this week that was written something like this:

Dear Peggy,

I have decided to allow you to aid in my job search.

Could you please let me know what type of marketing efforts you have in mind?

I need to get a job asap.

Hmmm…Does this person understand the role of the third party contingency recruiter? I don’t think so.

While some searches involve marketing efforts, they are more the exception than the rule. Sometimes, recruiters will market a candidate to a new client to entice that client to do business with them. As in: “Look at the quality of this candidate. If you worked with me, all of your candidates would be this great!”

Here’s the basics of how recruiters work:

All contingency recruiters are paid for by the client. Therefore, they work for the client.

The recruiter’s mission is to provide the client with the type of candidates that the client specifies. Sometimes candidates confuse the client’s requests/demands with those of the recruiters, but the recruiter doesn’t make the rules, the client does.

If a client specifies they want a specific skill set and background; that is usually the only kind of candidate they will look at. However, if the recruiter has a good relationship with the client, they may entertain input from the recruiter and expand their pool of candidates.

When a recruiter says, “You aren’t a good fit for this opportunity”, they aren’t telling you that you aren’t good at what you do. They are telling you that their customer (the client) has specified who they will look at and consider as a qualified candidate and you don’t meet the client’s requirements.

(The irony here is that many recruiters will tell you that skill sets are transferable, to a point, and that clients would be better served if they looked at candidates with similar skill sets. For example, selling an executive jet is very different from selling laboratory capital equipment, but they are both complex sales with long sales cycles. Someone with a record of success selling jets might do very well selling capital equipment in the lab because the sales process is very similar. In this case, though, the deal-breaker might be that the jet salesperson doesn’t have a science degree and the client may have reservations about the jet salesperson being able to grasp the science of their products and environment.)

Good recruiters try to add value to the hiring process and can be a valuable asset to hiring managers beyond just providing candidates. The level of partnership and input is directly related to the relationship the client has with the recruiter.

Did you know that less than 30% of recruiters are in business more than 3 years? Many try and many fail. To ensure a positive result, look for a recruiter who has chosen recruiting as her profession and has been doing it a while.

A proven track record is your assurance, whether you’re a candidate or a client, that the recruiter you choose is going to deliver what you need.
These guidelines apply to any industry, not just medical sales, laboratory sales, clinical diagnostics sales, pharmaceutical sales, DNA products sales, biotechnology sales, cellular/molecular products sales, hospital equipment sales, medical imaging sales, pathology sales, surgical instruments sales, or any healthcare sales.

This past Wednesday, as I was driving back to the office from lunch, I saw a man with a curious affliction. Only one, mind you. Nothing that would cause him despair or significant pain, but something serious nonetheless.

To be sure I had it right, I leaned back and rubbernecked. Yep, there it was again. I wondered whether he was aware? Maybe he was aware but didn’t understand about this particular mistake. Maybe he was clueless altogether having not being the proud owner of a mirror. His affliction?

His pants were at least 4 inches above his shoes.

In my younger days I might have shouted “Hey, where’s the flood?”. Lucky for him, I have matured dramatically since my younger days. My first thought as I continued on was about the many other afflictions that can drive an embarrassing or painful moment in one’s life. You may have a few others to add. Here’s my list.

- A food stain on your tie or blouse
- An unzipped zipper
- Your new outfit – out on the town – with a dangling price tag
- Ketchup on your upper lip
- Your skirt caught in the car door

Now here’s the real test. If you saw someone (friend or complete stranger) with one of the above afflictions, would you tell them? Would you avoid the situation altogether so as to not have to be the one to share the bad news?

So tell me. Should I have stopped to tell this man that his pants were wrongly tailored or to remind him that as he grows he needs to buy larger pants?

What if this scenario was changed slightly? What if instead of it being a social issue it was related to job search? Someone you meet at a networking event has a problem that he/she is not aware of . . . and it could mean the difference in getting an interview or getting an offer.

Would you tell them?

So, while the afflictions listed above can clearly play a role in a disappointing result in job search, what are the examples that can “do you in” during a search? Here’s my list:

RESUME/COVER LETTER
- A spelling or grammatical error (or two!)
- The misrepresentation of a responsibility or an accomplishment
- The use of a tiny or unreadable font
- Writing in paragraph form vs. easy to digest bullet points
- A lack of specific and measurable accomplishments
- See my Cover Letter Segmentation Study

JOB SEARCH EVENTS
- Over-eating or over-drinking
- No clear job objectives or target companies
- Not properly dressed

INTERVIEWS
- A lack of interesting or compelling things to say
- Poor interviewing techniques including telling jokes or swearing
- Disguising the real you

NETWORKING
- Not paying for lunch
- Being selfish with job leads
- Forget to say “thanks”

OTHER
- An unprofessional or depressed voice mail message
- Letting your ego get in the way
- Going it alone

OK. So here’s your task. At your next networking event, look for the guy or gal with an affliction. Instead of saying “glad that’s not me”, I’ve got an other option for you . . .

Tell them about it.

“My son is a senior in college and he hasn’t started his job search yet. I can’t seem to get him to get in high gear. I’m tempted to write his resume for him and just start sending it around but I’m pretty sure that’s a bad idea.Any suggestions?”

First of all, let me say that your son is fortunate to have a parent who is so invested in his future. You are right, however, that it would NOT be a good idea for you to write his resume for him, or to conduct his job search on his behalf.

There may be a number of factors contributing to your son’s apparent disinterest in starting his job search.

Workload:
As a senior, your son may be feeling overwhelmed, or at least, consumed with the task of graduating. Many seniors can get bogged down with research projects, term papers, presentations, honors theses, etc. That “bogged down” feeling may be exacerbated if he is also working part time, involved in extra-curricular activities, athletics, volunteering, or is committed to other duties. Since conducting an effective job search can be a full time job, in and of itself, your son may not feel like he has the time, energy or resources to start his job search.

Fear:
There’s a lot to fear related to conducting a job search, especially these days. There’s fear of failure, of new or added responsibility, of change, of rejection, of leaving the familiar. While all perfectly reasonable fears, they can act as an enormous stumbling block for anyone intending to start their job search.

Lack of Experience:
Let’s face it, many college students leave college with a lot of knowledge but not a lot of experience. The workforce requires BOTH. The job search can be particularly daunting if your son is not sure that he has sufficient occupation-specific experience. Even with internship experience, the Class of 2009 will be competing against ‘08 grads who may just now be entering the job market after taking a year to travel, intern, or shore up their skills in other ways. ‘09 grads will also be competing against the many professionals who were laid off this past year who will have significantly more experience than new grads.

What should your son, and others like him, do to “get in high gear”?
If workload is the issue, or if various fears may be hindering his job search, then it would likely benefit your son to break up the job search processes into small, tangible, accomplish-able tasks. If your son is very busy with other things, incorporating small job search tasks may feel more manageable, and less scary. He might start by committing just 10-15 minutes a day to job search activities. For example, he might spend 10 minutes looking for job postings in his field of interest on a mega job search engine, like Indeed.com. After the 10 minutes are up, he moves onto a different, non-job search activity, whether or not he has found any positions to which he would like to apply. (Using the Internet as his sole job search strategy would NOT be particularly effect, but it might be a safe starting place.) Or, your son might spend ten minutes creating the basic structure of a resume. Whatever steps he takes initially, he needs to start somewhere and build momentum. Once there’s momentum, there are a number of job search-related activities that I discuss in an earlier article that your son could pursue that would demonstrate to potential employers that he is genuinely interested in his field.

If your son lacks experience in his field what he really needs is TIME so that he can gain that experience. However, since graduation is just around the corner, there are a few things he might consider doing before commencement to gain some of the experience he needs. He should begin reading through job descriptions for entry level positions in his field and become familiar with the specific duties he would be expected to perform. Then, he’ll need to identify where the gaps exist in his experience and then look for ways to get the experience in the next few months. When I first applied for the Career Information Specialist position for my current employer, experience with MS Access was an important requirement. I had used Mac’s FileMaker Pro, but had never built a database or maintained one, and had not touched MS Access. Before I was even offered an interview, I installed MS Access on my computer and set about creating a basic database (to maintain my job search contacts and leads). By the time I interviewed for the position, I could confidently say that I had a working knowledge of MS Access. I could not say that I had significant experience with it, but my employer was impressed that I took the initiative to learn the software.

Keep in mind, however, that there are some skills that simply require time to develop and it might not be possible to acquire a sufficient level of proficiency before graduation. This brings me to my next point – your son needs to have a Plan B, and C, and D, and so on. He might NOT find a job right away. Even if he had started his job search in the fall, he might still not find a job in his field immediately upon graduation. You will both need to be prepared for him to explore other employment avenues. Unfortunately, according to the most recent Recruiting Trends presentation, the traditional fall-back jobs, such as retail, sales and marketing, have dried up. Your son’s backup plans may need to consist of “non-traditional” forms of work, such as splicing together multiple part time jobs, temping, volunteering, interning, or job-sharing. It will be important for your son to remain flexible and open to a variety of work options.

Finally, but perhaps most importantly, encourage your son to connect with the career services office at his institution. Their professionals can work with him to identify an effective and tailored action plan for getting his job search started and on the right track. They are likely networked with recruiters in your area as well as alums of the college who may be willing to offer advice or leads to your son.

Kudos to you for supporting your son – continue to do so, but definitely fight the urge to do the work of job searching for him.

Since we were presenting their site in its entirety without modification, since we were not claiming any of their work as our own, we believe that what we were doing was completely legitimate and was actually helping their business by exposing our readers to their magazine.

It is our opinion that we were not breaking any laws and that we were using this page to serve our readers while also providing a direct benefit to Chain Leader magazine.

Apparently, the people in charge of the magazine who also direct their legal resources don’t have any idea how the Internet works. Good luck to them in their pursuit to capture market share from online magazines like Nation’s Restaurant News with editorial policy like this.

The cause from last year and again this year should be a familiar one because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And this year it is even a more dear cause. My wife’s sister was just diagnosed with breast cancer and has surgery scheduled for this week. I tell you this not for sympathy, but as a reminder of how many lives this disease touches. Please remember, every woman who gets breast cancer is someone’s mom, sister, or daughter.

This October, please make a donation to the cause and do something, anything that will help raise awareness. Thank you. -Carl

Some people just don’t have enough real work to do. Take for example The National Inhalant Prevention Council who have been angered by and are protesting the Wendy’s commercial where office workers ‘fill’ themselves with helium.

Supposedly the action of filling themselves with helium will give people ‘inappropriate’ ideas. Come one guys, let’s do something constructive with your time and money. Helium is an inert gas that is sometimes added to deep water diver’s breathing gas mixture. It doesn’t cause any ill effects, other than that annoying chipmunks sounding voice. While these people are all riled up against Wendy’s, there are real inhalant issues out there to deal with. Mostly they can be handled with education, because kids usually only hear the ‘good’ effects of and not about the death or brain damage that huffing can lead to.

As for the commercial, well I don’t like any of the new Wendy’s ‘wig’ commercials, but that is another story.

For the longest time, I’ve been saying that my friend (and now world famous author), Jason Alba is not related to super attractive movie star, Jessica Alba. But after seeing commercials for her new movie (Good Luck Chuck) I’m now convinced that I may have been wrong all this time.

Look at the evidence, Jessica plays an incredibly convincing klutz who is loveable, but certainly not the most suave and sophisticated creature that you have ever met. And Jason, well he certainly is loveable, and he is about as helpful a person as you will ever find… but no one will ever confuse him with Rico Suave. Now you have Jessica in the included portrait, which differs mightily from all of the other eye-candy shots that have graced this blog for low these many months… and you have Jason’s article about his mug shot in which he admits that his photo is sort of goofy… (I think I notice a strong family resemblance) where both of them are sporting somewhat silly grins.

So when you add up the evidence, the cute smile, the unassuming air of "boy/girl next-doorness", the goofy, klutzy lack of coordination (OK I made that up about Jason, but I bet it fits) I think that it means that Jason and Jessica just may be related… and that I was wrong all this time.

THE RULZ
1. Post these rules before you give you the facts.
2. List 8 random facts about yourself.
3. At the end of your post, choose (tag) 8 people and list their names (linking to them).
4. Leave them a comment on their blog letting them know they’ve been tagged!
